GOP Gameplan: Nominating Mitt Romney at Brokered Convention

It’s pretty obvious at this point that the Republican political establishment believes (or hopes) Donald Trump will not win the nomination by the time of the convention. So what is their game plan? How about Mitt Romney as the alternative choice in brokered convention? The speech denouncing Trump and this appearance on Jimmy Kimmel sure lends credence to that theory. Apparently, they don’t want either of the 3 candidates still running.

Is it possible? Yes, it is:

On Sunday, Romney was asked by a reporter whether he would accept the nomination in the event of a “brokered” or “contested” Republican National Convention in July. Romney suggested that, if it was given, he would accept it.

“I don’t think anyone in our party should say, ‘Oh no, even if the people of the party wanted me to be president, I would say no to it,’” he said. “No one is going to say that.”

Even in the increasingly expectation-breaking election cycle of Donald Trump, the idea that someone who isn’t actually running for president could be the Republican presidential nominee is, at best, perplexing. But it is possible, according to Steffen Schmidt, a political science professor at Iowa State University.

“Yes, it is absolutely possible that Mitt Romney could be the Republican nominee,” he told ThinkProgress on Friday. “I don’t know how likely it is, but it’s possible.”

He’s already filed the paperwork:

Mitt Romney spoke out about the “phony” Donald Trump claiming the businessman would be devastating the American economy and foreign relations. Romney claimed in his speech that he has no intention of running for president but refused to offer an endorsement to any of the remaining candidates. Instead, Romney pushed voters to vote for whichever candidate has the best chance of winning in a particular state. However, some have questioned if Romney is secretly planning to run for president as it was revealed that paperwork was filed with the FEC on January 31, 2016, for the “Romney For President” candidate committee.
